A seminar series on diffusion modelling to determine timescales of
processes (Diffusion Chronometry)

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to announce a new seminar series focused on the
determination of different timescale related parameters using diffusion
modelling. The intention is to develop a forum for scientific exchange
on the topic. The lectures will take place usually on the4th Thursday
of each month at 16:30 - 18:30, Central European Time Zone to
accommodate as many participants from across the globe as possible. The
format will be *two lectures of about 30 minutes *each with ample time
for questions and discussions. The seminar series will be launched on
Thursday, August 26 with

James Van Orman, Case Western University, USA:**/"Modeling closure
temperatures in isochron systems"/

Rebecca deGraffenried, Ruhr Universität Bochum, Germany: /"Mitigating
errors in decompression rates calculated from crystal-hosted melt
embayments"/

*Background and Mode: *The use of diffusion modelling to get information
on timescales of diverse geological and cosmochemical processes began in
the 1960's, but has become relatively widespread only in the past few
years. These are often practiced under different names such as
/diffusion chronometry/, /geospeedometry/,/thermochronology/ or the
/determination of metallographic cooling rates./ Similar tools and data
are used in fields as wide-ranging as volcanology, metamorphic
petrology, igneous petrology, ore deposit studies, meteoritics,
planetary sciences (e.g. samples from the Moon or Mars), diagenesis and
even in the study of sedimentary processes. As a result, it is often
found that methods that are well-established in one branch are often
considered novel in another.

There have been attempts in the past to bring scientists working in the
different areas together in sessions at scientific conferences, but with
little success. The availability of online platforms now provides an
alternative. Moreover, in many cases there are methods that earth and
planetary scientists can adapt from material scientists. The intention
in this series is to make use of this opportunity and bring together
these diverse group of scientists interested in modelling diffusion
related phenomena in terrestrial and planetary materials, and to provide
a forum for exchange. The focus, at least initially, will be on the
determination of timescale related parameters – quantities such as
residence times in magma chambers, cooling- or exhumation rates of rocks
etc. – but may be expanded later to include other aspects.

We will strive to balance talks that focus on experiments (e.g. to
determine diffusion coefficients) or modelling methods and those that
focus on applications.

The Seminar will be held using the Zoom platform - so you will need to
have installed the software (available free of cost
at:https://zoom.us/de-de/freesignup.html

Registration is required to avoid undesired interruptions. Please
