Dear colleagues,

My research group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is looking to fill a postbaccalaureate research position in isotope geochemistry. If you have or will soon have a Bachelor’s degree and have some experience working in a chemistry lab and/or mass spectrometers, we’d love to hear from you.

You can find more information below and at the following link: https://www.llnl.gov/join-our-team/careers/find-your-job/all/REF4491O The salary range is $5,380–$7,270 monthly.

The position is for one year, with an opportunity to renew for a second year. You will get a full benefits package, relocation assistance, 401(k), and other benefits like any other employee (despite what your title “Academic Graduate Appointee” sounds like). This position does not require U.S. citizenship.

Several others who have been in this position have used the experience as a springboard for graduate school or other research staff positions here and elsewhere.

Thank you for your help spreading the word. Please note that all applications must be submitted through the above link.

All the best,
Christine

Job description
We have an opening for an Analytical Chemist to perform sample preparation and isotopic analysis by high precision mass spectrometry.  Your work involves digestions of a variety of geological and radiological sample types, chemical purifications in a clean-room laboratory setting, and isotopic analysis by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) or thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). This opportunity is in the Cosmochemical and Isotopic Sciences group in the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division (NACS).

You will

  • Perform sample digestions and preparations of a variety of radiological, environmental and geologic sample types.
  • Purify actinides or stable trace elements from sample matrix for isotopic analysis by MC-ICP-MS or TIMS.
  • Assist with isotopic analysis of samples by MC-ICP-MS or TIMS.
  • Maintain a stock of clean labware and reagents necessary to support sample preparation and analysis, including re-ordering of general lab supplies.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory notes to ensure quality control of analytical results and to support preparation of reports.
  • Collaborate with group members and the principal investigator on multiple projects.
  • Present formal and informal overviews of analytical process flow or results at group meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geochemistry, Chemistry or related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience with sample digestion techniques using concentrated acids.
  • Experience performing sample purifications using selective extraction media or chromatographic separation methods.
  • Experience performing sample preparation or other work in a clean room environment.
  • Experience with critical data record keeping in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience using standard software such as Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Experience documenting and presenting research results.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience performing low-blank sample preparation of trace-level analytes in a clean room environment.
  • Experience performing isotopic analysis by MC-ICP-MS or TIMS.
  • Intermediate skill with a programming language such as Python, R or Matlab.
