My deepest sympathies to Gretchen, Charlie lives on in his science and humanity. He was a great friend and colleague  and  the three of us shared many  wonderful times together.

Sad news, but it brings back many happy memories. You knew Charlie was
special by the company he kept - Gretchen, of course, but also his top
notch post-docs, associates, collaborators, and distinguished visitors. It
was a privilege to have worked with him as a graduate student at Stony
Brook in the '70s and to have learned so many valuable lessons
(crystallographic and otherwise) from him.
