Minerals Day 2020

Minerals Day: MSA is collaborating with the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) and other scientific societies and agencies to celebrate Minerals Day on October 12, 2020, the second day of Earth Science Week. Minerals Day is an opportunity to learn about:

  • The Science of Minerals

  • The Value of Minerals

  • The Beauty of Minerals
The theme for Earth Science Week this year is Earth Materials in Our Lives, which is perfect for the launch of Minerals Day. MSA and AGI are already promoting Minerals Day via Facebook and Twitter. A Minerals Day microsite will launch shortly, linked to the MSA home page, with a schedule of free webinars during Earth Science Week (October 11 – 17), teaching resources, and two downloadable posters. MSA members will be notified when the mini-website launches. Webinar topics organized by MSA include:

  • Advances in the Mineralogy of Mars (Dr. Elizabeth Rampe, Johnson Space Center)

  • New Insights into Wire Silver and Gold Formation (Dr. John Rakovan, Miami University)

  • Gemology: Time Capsules Connecting Us Through History (Dr. Aaron Palke, Gemological Institute of America)

  • The Future of Data-Driven Discovery in Mineralogy and Crystallography (Dr. Shaunna Morrison, Carnegie Institution for Science)

There will also be webinars during Earth Science Week organized by AGI and the USGS. Registration information for the webinars will be on the Minerals Day microsite and on the Earth Science Week website: www.earthsciweek.org.
