GSA Session: From anode to cathode: Mineral systems of battery commodities

Dear MSA,

Here is another mineral-related session to put on your radar as the GSA
abstract deadline is fast approaching!  We hope you will consider our
session exploring mineral systems of battery materials. This broad session
will focus on mineral system genesis, characterization, mining, and
processing of the mineral commodities required to meet the increasing
demands for batteries and battery energy storage systems.

Conveners: Rebecca Stokes (USGS), Katie Harrison (National Laboratory of
the Rockies),  Andy Materson (USGS), Aaron Jubb (USGS), George Case (USGS)

Invited Speakers: Shelby Short (Bureau of Economic Geology); Anthony
Burrell (National Laboratory of the Rockies)

*Description: *Many of the minerals and elements required to meet the
increasing demand for advanced battery technology are included on the USGS
critical minerals list. These include, but are not limited to, graphite,
lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese
and are considered essential to the
nation’s economy or national security. Improving our understanding of these
resources through the (re)evaluation of the geodynamic settings and mineral
systems in which they form, development of new characterization methods,
and linking these findings to downstream extraction and processing, will
reduce the criticality of these materials.  This session invites
presentations on battery-specific critical minerals, in particular those
highlighting innovative research in both upstream and downstream fields.
