Dear Colleagues,
I am very sad to inform you that Jim Webster, our esteemed colleague at the American Museum, passed away in his sleep the morning of July 6, 2019. Jim was a dedicated experimental petrologist, geologist, and educator who leaves a giant emptiness in our ranks here and among his colleagues and friends. Please access his obituary, written by his colleague Ed Mathez, on our department website:

We expect a memoriam will take place, but it is too soon to know when. Let me know if you want to be informed about this event.
Sadly,
George Harlow

This is terrible news. Jim was a first class scientist who was kind and compassionate . i recall many a long discussion with him on halogens and i always learned something important from him. Condolences to his family and friends… the world is a worse place with his passing. Very sad news.

Very sad news indeed - I had the opportunity to serve under his chairmanship as a postdoc with Ed. Jim was very kind hearted, compassionate and a very sensible person and a great scientist. Last time we met in Prague and had a long chat sitting outside the main venue - shared many memories.
We have lost a real gentleman. My condolences to all in his family.
